In the light of Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross' Oscar win for best score with "The Social Network" (congratulations by the way guys!) I thought I'd post a quick addendum to the post I wrote a year or so back entitled: (Dawn of the) Dead Synth score... The full post can be read here, but what it essentially amounted to was a lament for the fact that no-one seems to want or be capable of writing a decent synthesized score these days...
Thankfully, that situation seems to have changed a little during the past 12 months, aside from TSN, we also had Daft Punk's score for "Tron Legacy" which, while it did also use an orchestra, also prominently featured synthesizers rather than simply using them for additional colour, or weird fx.
The future looks bright(er) for next year as well with Reznor & Ross scoring David Fincher's next fim: "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", plus the Chemical Brothers scoring Joe Wright's new movie, "Hanna".
Admittedly a handful of releases using electronic scores does not really constitute a revival, but at least it proves there's still a place for non-traditional motion picture scores...and who knows? Perhaps the Oscar win for TSN will open up other Producers and Directors eyes (& ears) to the possibility of using something other than a symphony orchestra to score their next picture...
Here's hoping....
